Margaret Hamilton
Dec. 9, 1902 to May 16, 1985

Margaret came to Hollywood in 1933. She starred in
"Another Language". This was a reprise of her Broadway role. From 1933-1938, she did supporting roles in 25 pictures.
On Aug. 20, Margaret found
out that Gale Sondergaard
had been given the role
of The Wicked Witch. On Oct. 10, Margaret was
given the role when Gale declined it because of the
change in the
Witch's character. She was married to
Paul Meserve
(a landscape architect). She divorced him in 1938
because of physical and
mental cruelty.
She got custody of their son, Hamilton Meserve. She taught elementary school
(in Boston and New York)
before becoming an actress. Margaret was involved in a fiery accident on the
set of Munchkin Land. It was during her disappearing scene when leaving the land
that the tragic accident
occurred. The date given
for this accident is
Dec. 28, 1938. She made more than 60 movies in her career and did many television
appearances. Margaret was also the
Maxwell House lady,
"Cora",
in their commercials. In 1974, Margaret did the
voice of Aunt Em in
"Journey Back to Oz",
a cartoon. Margaret was 82 when
she died of a heart attack
in a nursing home in
Salisbury, Conn.
