Her real Name was Clara Dickey.
She is best known and loved for one particular role, that of Aunt Em in
"The Wizard of Oz." She was born on an American ship
moored in Hong Kong on June 4, 1881. Although little is known of her
early years, she began her acting career Broadway
in 1912 and it wasn't until she was in her 30s that she appeared in films for
the first time. Her film debut was in "Mrs. Black is Back"
(1914) a silent, as Emily Mason. Clara retired in 1952 from movies. She
lived in the famed Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. On Palm Sunday April 15,
1962 she went to church, came home and dressed in her finest clothing,
she then took sleeping pills and placed a plastic bag over her head and
died a suicide in Hollywood, California at the age of 80. |
